Major Tom is not your ordinary compressor. It was designed with very specific goals in mind, and blew right past them.
Major Tom is intended to be easy to use: there are no attack and release controls. Those values vary depending on the level of the signal relative to its threshold. They are finely tuned to keep compression musical without making you fight a huge control surface.
The attack and release behavior is inspired by classic “stealth” vintage compression. Major Tom will pump when pushed, but it does so in a musical, rhythmic way.
Use it gently on vocals for smoothing, on bass for thickness, and on drums when you want extra smack. Heavy gain reduction can make it savage and funky; lighter settings stay polished and controlled.
